LANFest 2016 --- And now we see the end.

Phaytel aCSGODota 2o posted Oct 25, 16  -  Lanfest2016

We have come to the close of LANFest 2016. We gave away nearly $1000 worth or prizes and had plenty of fun!

I'm hope that everyone had a good time. Please leave us some feedback here!

The first day of the LAN is a glorious sunny Autumn rainy AF day in western Pennsylvania. We rolled about a 3 on Chance for Precipitation. That rain resulted in us encountering a smidge of a delay with setup, but we're good to go now.

When you arrive, feel free to pull up as (reasonably!) close as you can get to the door to unload. Please do not pull onto the grass or block the garage doors; the garage doors must be accessible at all times for the fire trucks. If it is still raining, we have umbrellas and gigantic bags that you may use to cover any equipment that might need it.

We have much more parking flexibility this year, we can direct you when you arrive.

We have coffee, cold Surge, Bawls, Red Bull, and more.

See you soon!

BawlsRed BullSurge.

A LAN party without gratuitous caffeine is like a bar without alcohol. We're always prepared with multiple cases of caffeinated fizzy drink, and have run stealth resupply missions mid-event. (We also have non-caffeinated beverages from the weak at heart)

This year, we decided to institute a new perk:

Attendees can get a free caffeinated beverage of their choice!

To get your voucher for a free caffeinated beverage of your choice, simply bring your own lanyard to LANFest. This can be the one you got last year, or one you have laying around (I, for instance, have one with zombie alpacas on it).

When you check in at the event, let us know that you have your own lanyard. You will then get your badge and voucher that you can redeem with the Kitchen whenever you wish during LANFest 2016. Vouchers won't be transferrable year-over-year, though, so be sure to redeem before the weekend ends!

Registration Info

Other registration Need-To-Knows

BYOC LAN Admission - $30
General (No PC) Admission - $15

Explanation of Admission

In order to bring your own PC and truly participate in the LAN, you must purchase a BYOC pass; this covers your physical space, power, and network port.

General Admission is to grant you access to the event space if you are not bringing a PC. In doing so, you will have access to consoles, tabletop/cards, etc. You will also be able to play audience to ongoing tournaments and any random giveaways or non-PC tournaments that may occur.

Modus Operandi
BYOC (bring your own computer). We just need you to get here with your rig and set it up. We can accommodate up to 40 BYOC players. We will also have consoles (one word: Smash), tabletop (DND and perhaps others), and cards. We will have two rates for access - general admission and with a PC.
2016 will feature another delightful Siamese CS:GO tournament, more HL2DM, more Towerfall, and Drawful. Other games and tournaments will be announced after we gauge interest. As always, we not only welcome but eagerly encourage input on what games or events you'd like to see, so head over to the forum and tell us what YOU want to see at LANFest 2016.

You Should Bring...

  • Computer (Desktop or Laptop)
  • Monitor, if needed (Only one, 27" or less so er'body has space)
  • All cables & adapters, power, display, networking*, etc.
  • Power Strip Plug/Surge Protector
  • Headset (no speakers, please!)
  • Keyboard & Mouse
  • Mousing surface (the tables will not be conducive to mousing!)
  • Charger and/or batteries if you have any wireless peripherals
* If, for whatever reason, you do not have a cable/it doesn't work/it isn't long enough, we will have CAT6 on site that we can custom-cut (ensuring proper length). These cables will be $5 for up to fifteen feet and are yours to keep. This makes your life easier. Why?

  • it is one less thing to have to remember to pack
  • you will not have to make another stop if you forgot to pack one
  • you will not have to pay ludicrous retail prices for it
  • you will be sure you have the correct length for the event (from your seat).

Also, please ensure that the computer you bring is up-to-date with OS updates, Steam Updates, and any games you plan to play before you arrive. This doesn't only mean more time to play for you, but it also means that bandwidth isn't being hogged by such downloads/installs so that everyone can enjoy high-quality network connectivity and gameplay.

Hotel Info

As of 9/17/2016 for days 10/20 thru 10/23. These are the regular rates published on the below hotels' sites; you may be able to get a better rate with a AAA membership or corporate affiliation. Remember: Hotel rates change all the time, so you may find rates different from what is shared below.

Comfort Suites - Rooms start at $99 per night, some rooms have microwaves and mini fridges. Room rentals include complimentary hot breakfast.

Hampton Inn - Rooms start at $144 per night.

Holiday Inn Express - Regular rooms start at $108 per night, suites start at $141 per night. Room rentals include complimentary breakfast.

Fairfield Inn - Rates vary dependng on room type, seem to go from $127 thru $169 per night.

MyPlace hotel - $98 per night regardless of if you get a single queen bed or two queen beds. Because this is setup as an extended stay hotel (there's no minimum stay duration), rooms are outfitted with a kitchenette featuring a small (but not mini!) fridge, microwave, sink, coffee pot, and two-burner stovetop.

Abyss Gaming shirts will be available for purchase at the event.

As always, tell your friends! We grow mostly by word of mouth.
Send them our way to check this info out, or just flat out have them tag (or drag them?) along!

You can find the official LANFest 2016 Discussion Thread here.

Also, you shouldn't really drag your friends. Consent is important, and is as simple as tea. You should, however, encourage them not to be shy! We've had only good, albeit weird (aka all of us; part of the territory) people at our events. We hope to see you in October!

NOTE: This event (and all other Abyss Gaming events thus far) is not a "For Profit" event. Any money that is collected on top of our costs will be reinvested in the next event, prizes or tournaments. All staff are volunteers. There are no paid positions associated with this event.

Hey everyone,

We've been a little quiet since the LAN. Recovering from putting on one of those events takes a little bit and then life caught up and we didn't have time to be as chatty as we were. The LAN was great, it was a success; we had a good time and believe everyone who came did, too.

You may have noticed that the Paypal community Donation widget is gone, and has been gone, for a little while, as has the subscription-based admin page (Abyss Gaming t-shirts are still available for sale, though - just message us if you're interested).

Previously, donations were a supplement the funds we put into running the community and servers. They enabled us to have a robust box with NFO, and enabled us to grow. They also enabled us to secure a lot of great prizes for events we held like CGN, and so forth. Even with those donations, we were still covering most of the cost.

That said, we have to scale back. We need to focus our money towards the puchase of a home. We're also in a particularly busy season of life at the moment, and we need to priortize things other than payment and money management and donation tracking for the servers. AG is important, but sometimes adulting prevails.

What This Means

This means we have to scale back our own monetary involvement; we will no longer to able to fund the game servers themselves. We are still paying for Enjin and other aspects of the community and site out of our pocket. In fact, we are still going to take care of most everything we have dealt with in the past - keeping things running, updated, and so forth. The community itself remains unchanged. AG is here to stay.

As far as the servers go, phix negotiated and locked in a fantastic price on our hosting and server(s) with Nuclear Fallout WITHOUT sacrificing the services enjoyed. The cost is billed in six-month increments at $261.82. (Abyss Gaming does receive a discount for semi-annual billing, hence this arrangement).

We made what will (for the foreseeable future) be our last payment for the servers on November 14, 2015; the server(s) are paid through May 2016. That said, they will remain live thereafter contingent on that amount being met prior to the renewal date. If that amount is not met by the renewal in six months, or subsequent renewals thereafter, NFO will suspend service until it is.

Donations to keep the servers going can be made via THIS LINK to NFO's donation portal (we will get the link in an easily-accessible place as well). Donations made here go straight to the servers and can be made via Paypal (like before) or directly via Visa, Mastercard, Amex, or Discover. We cannot access these donations; they go straight to the server costs. This allows for seamless operation without it being something else we need to keep track of.

To give you an idea, as long as the community can come up with $44/mo, this will not be an issue. If our regulars were able to throw $5/mo each at it it would probably be good.

Feel free to ask phix or I questions in this thread (or privately, if you prefer).

Thanks guys!
